Trump moves to make AI woke-free

President Trump unveiled his AI Action Plan on Wednesday, setting the course for America’s AI revolution.
The plan recommends over 90 policy actions across three categories: innovation, infrastructure, and AI diplomacy and security. These actions include improving AI skills and literacy throughout America’s workforce, helping workers displaced by AI, cutting red tape and restricting regulation in AI development, removing environmental mandates affecting AI infrastructure, ensuring national security in AI, broadening access to AI innovation for small businesses, and coordinating AI development with government agencies and corporations.
One of the first policy actions relates to eliminating woke ideologies and censorship practices from AI.
“Led by the Department of Commerce (DOC) through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), revise the NIST AI Risk Management Framework to eliminate references to misinformation, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and climate change,” the White House document requires.
In addition, the federal government will be prohibited from contracting AI-related services with institutions that have a “top-down ideological bias.” This could force Big Tech companies like Meta, Google, and OpenAI to scale back the far-Left programming in their products. In 2023, for example, ChatGPT generated a fake citation to support gender ideology. Last year, Meta AI labeled the attempted assassination of President Trump a “fictional event.” Google’s Gemini has refused to depict a male pope while rendering America’s Founding Fathers as Black. ChatGPT has vilified the unvaccinated and praised Antifa.
“It is essential that these systems be built from the ground up with freedom of speech and expression in mind, and that U.S. government policy does not interfere with that objective,” the plan reads. “We must ensure that free speech flourishes in the era of AI and that AI procured by the Federal government objectively reflects truth rather than social engineering agendas.”
A turnaround from Biden
The plan is in major contrast to the Biden administration’s approach to AI. In October 2023, Joe Biden signed an executive order setting standards for the AI industry that included embedding woke ideologies in AI development.
The order instructed the Justice Department and federal civil rights offices to address racism in AI, or “algorithmic discrimination”, which involves creating a plan for “investigating and prosecuting civil rights violations related to AI.”
The EO also required the government to use AI for “climate change” and other globalist purposes:
Promote the safe, responsible, and rights-affirming development and deployment of AI abroad to solve global challenges, such as advancing sustainable development and mitigating dangers to critical infrastructure.
