Socialist movement gains ground after NYC Democratic mayoral primary

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) says recruitment has skyrocketed after one of its members, Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani, won the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor last week.

In addition to Mamdani, the DSA’s over 90,000 members include far-Left members of Congress like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), both of whom endorsed Mamdani. The Uganda-born Muslim is running on a strong socialist platform that includes government-run grocery stores, free public transportation, frozen rent prices, universal childcare, medical mutilation for minors packaged as “gender-affirming care,” defunding the police, further taxing the rich, and additionally taxing White people.

Even if Mamdani loses the election in November, he has already made his mark by emboldening the socialist movement.

‘Socialism wins!’

The DSA claims that over 1,300 new members signed up between Tuesday and Wednesday last week, when Mamdani won the Democratic primary. The organization was recruiting just dozens of members at a time before the election.

“Socialism wins!” the DSA crowed on social media after Mamdani’s victory. “We did this. Join DSA.”

In a marketing email to supporters obtained by the Daily Caller, the DSA wrote: “Our fellow democratic socialist and DSA member Zohran Mamdani is now the Democratic Party’s nominee for Mayor of New York City! Now people like you across the country — from Kansas, to Florida, to Texas — are joining DSA in droves.”

“Through torrential downpours and life-threatening heat, NYC-DSA members and members from across the country knocked on thousands of doors, made thousands of phone calls, brought the block to the polls, and delivered a victory for working people everywhere,” the email said.

The DSA’s claims of increased recruitment appear to be confirmed on social media, where users have been posting screenshots of their new membership confirmations.

Support for terrorism

Last month, the DSA came under fire after some of its members cheered the killing of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, young Israeli embassy staffers who were shot to death outside the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. The gunman, Elias Rodriguez, is a radical Leftist who supports Hamas and has called for the genocide of White people. Rodriguez shouted “Free Palestine” as he shot the couple, who were engaged to be married.

Following the murders, a debate sparked within the DSA, with some members arguing that intentional killing civilians is a legitimate form of protest against the unintentional killing of civilians in Gaza. “Is it good to condemn violence against a genocidal apartheid state?” one member with the username “SebastianFG” wrote in a post, which other members supported with heart and applause emojis. Other DSA members called the statement “horrific,” “hurtful,” and “irresponsible,”  The Free Press reported.

“Where is our commitment to non-violent resistance stated?” a DSA member with the username “ChrisW” asked. “It’s not in the constitution or bylaws, the closest thing is that we reject ‘brutality and violence in defense of the status quo.’”

Another member with the username “Conordachisen” emphasized that “non violent, peaceful action” is not the only option. “[T]here’ll also be comrades who understand that violent revolution is a thing, too,” the DSA member said.

The DSA Liberation Caucus, which describes itself as a “Marxist-Leninist-Maoist caucus in the DSA,” said on Friday it was “proud” to sign a statement by the militant group Unity of Fields that called the Israeli embassy killings “a legitimate act of resistance against the zionist  state and its genocidal campaign in Gaza.” The statement urged others “to echo [Rodriguez’s] own words and actions,” which it said were “fully justified.” The caucus also demanded the Justice Department “free Elias Rodriguez and all political prisoners,” and called for war against “zionists” worldwide “by any means necessary.”

“The Palestinian struggle is the tip of the spear against global imperialism,” the group declared. “As imperialism has made the entire world its battlefield, it is justified to fight it, by any means necessary, without regard for geography. This holds especially true for those of us struggling behind enemy lines, inside the US, an entity that is an equal party in all crimes committee by the Zionists. Whether in the besieged Gaza Strip, the Red Sea, the South of Lebanon or the heart of the US, there must be consequences zionist imperialism, and those consequences are righteous.”

The DSA has yet to condemn Rodriguez’s calls for genocide against Whites. It also has not provided any evidence of a “Palestinian genocide” other than Hamas’ own false data, which mainstream media outlets have legitimized.
