NYC’s top mayoral candidate sparks fears of socialist dystopia

As Zohran Mamdani emerges as the favorite to win New York City’s mayoral Democratic primary on Tuesday, many across the country have expressed concern that he will usher in a socialist dystopia.
Mamdani, a Uganda-born Muslim, belongs to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) movement. The DSA boasts over 90,000 members, including far-Left members of Congress like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
Socialism
Like his fellow DSA members, Mamdani believes “capitalism is theft.” He has emphasized his Muslim faith and repeatedly accused his opponents of “Islamophobia.” He has expressed hostility towards Israel and opposes its right to exist as a Jewish state. His socialist policies include taxing the wealthy more, freezing rent prices, promising universal childcare, and establishing government-owned grocery stores.
“As Mayor, Zohran will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit,” Mamdani’s campaign website says. “Without having to pay rent or property taxes, they will reduce overhead and pass on savings to shoppers. They will buy and sell at wholesale prices, centralize warehousing and distribution, and partner with local neighborhoods on products and sourcing. With New York City already spending millions of dollars to subsidize private grocery store operators (which are not even required to take SNAP/WIC!), we should redirect public money to a real ‘public option.’”
Medical mutilation
Mamdani is also set on medically mutilating children, or what gender activists call “gender-affirming care,” and plans to spend $65 million in taxpayer funds to do it. On his campaign website, Mamdani promises to crack down on local entities that follow the direction of President Trump, who signed an executive order in January withholding federal funding from any institution facilitating the medical mutilation of minors.
“The Mamdani administration will protect gender-affirming care immediately by investing $65 million in public providers to provide gender-affirming care to New Yorkers who seek it and will hold private entities abetting Trump’s attacks to account,” says Mamdani’s campaign, which emphasizes that this “gender-affirming care” will be for both “youth and adults.”
Glorified murder
Mamdani’s operatives are also far-Left. Julian Gerson, the political director for Mamdani’s campaign, has praised Luigi Mangione, who is accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In December, Gerson posted an op-ed lionizing Mangione.
"He is adored not only because he dared to target a leader of one of the most vile, self-enriching industries darkening our society today, but because he dared to defy the stasis of nihilistic rejection," Gerson wrote of Mangione. In the comments, Gerson even suggested that a street be named after the alleged killer: "[L]ooking forward to driving down Mangione Avenue a few decades from now."
According to recent polls, Mamdani is polling at 52% while former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is at 48%.
