Minnesota considers ‘pride’, communist symbols for new state flag

Minnesota is considering “pride” rainbow colors and the communist hammer and sickle symbol for its new state flag, which must reflect “diverse cultural communities.”

State officials have recently determined that the flag, adopted in 1893, is “racist” against Native Americans. The flag features a simplified version of the state seal in which a Native American man rides a horse carrying a spear while a pioneer plows a field. The presence of both is meant to symbolize the state’s Native American heritage and the settling of the state by pioneers, while the tools used by both men represent the tools of daily life.

But the flag has been deemed “racist and ugly.” University of Minnesota Urban Studies Professor William Lindeke claims the flag represents “the dominant feelings of white Minnesotans at the time, most of whom wanted to eradicate Native Americans from their homeland. As such, the seal and flag represent sentiments that led directly to the genocide of Dakota people, and is one that Minnesotans should not celebrate in any way."

In May the state’s legislature approved the creation of an Emblems Redesign Commission which is tasked with choosing new designs for both the flag and the state seal. The commission has until January to submit the designs to the legislature for approval.

"The Commission shall develop and adopt a new design for the official state seal and a new design for the official state flag. The designs must accurately and respectfully reflect Minnesota's shared history, resources, and diverse cultural communities," the commission said. "Symbols, emblems, or likenesses that represent only a single community or person, regardless of whether real or stylized, may not be included in a design."

Over 2,600 designs have been submitted, reports Fox News, though the commission has only accepted 2,123 as “qualifying submissions.”

However, despite the rule that symbols which represent “only a single community or person” may not be included, among the qualifying submissions accepted are designs which include “pride” rainbow flags and the Marxist hammer and sickle symbol.

Some are concerned that the rainbow colors, at least, will be adopted. The White House appeared to adopt the totalitarian gender flag in June when it was hung from the White House balcony as the centerpiece between two American flags. The action violated the US Flag Code which states that “Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor” when next to the American flag.

Federal law also treats defacing the gender flag as a “hate crime,” while defacing the American flag as “free speech.”
